What problem does it solve?

The Schulte table was originally developed in the 1950s as an attention-training exercise. The idea: keep your gaze fixed at the center of the grid and use peripheral vision to identify numbers as far from center as possible. Skilled performers develop a smooth, wide scan pattern; novices tend to lock onto one quadrant.

Modern cognitive psychologists use it as a measure of sustained attention and peripheral visual span. It's also a surprisingly effective "warm-up" before study or work sessions.

Who is this for

How to interpret your results

Total time under 25 seconds is strong; under 35 seconds is typical for practiced adults. Anything over 60 seconds suggests you're either scanning inefficiently or genuinely fatigued.

Heatmap patterns. A "cool" heatmap (mostly uniform light blue) means a smooth, even scan. A "hot corner" means you're fixating there. A patchy pattern means you're jumping randomly without a strategy. Trying to fix your gaze on the center is the single biggest unlock.

Limitations

  • Touchscreens and mouse clicks have different motor costs. Your times aren't directly comparable across devices.
  • The Schulte table has not been rigorously studied for "transfer" to other attention tasks. It's a useful exercise, not a guaranteed training tool.
  • Peripheral vision acuity varies a lot by individual and lighting. Don't compare your times to others without context.

FAQ

Should I practice every day?

A few times a week is enough. The task is short (1–3 minutes) and there's a fatigue ceiling — going longer doesn't help.

What if I keep missing the center number?

That's normal for the first few sessions. The trick is keeping your eyes — not your mouse — near the center. Let peripheral vision find the numbers.
