Go / No-Go with Auditory Cues

Shapes flash; press Space when you see the "go" shape, hold when you see the "no-go" shape. A tone plays either at the same time (congruent) or opposite (incongruent) — that complicates things.

What makes this one different

Most Go/No-Go apps lump errors together. We split them: commission errors (pressed when you should have held) measure impulsivity; omission errors (failed to press when you should have) measure inattention. Two different cognitive problems, two different numbers.

What problem does it solve?

Go/No-Go is the canonical response-inhibition task. It's used in ADHD research, addiction research, and studies of impulse control. The basic finding is that most people can hold back most of the time, but lapse under time pressure or fatigue.

How to interpret your results

High commission errors, low omission errors = impulsive. Pressing too eagerly.

High omission errors, low commission errors = over-cautious. You're so worried about false alarms you're missing hits.

Both high = task is too hard or you're fatigued. Take a break.

Limitations

  • This is not a diagnostic for ADHD. Clinical Go/No-Go uses EEG and standardized protocols.
  • The shape-color mapping is arbitrary — you'll get better at the mapping over time, but the underlying inhibition signal stabilizes.
  • Browser timing has some jitter. For research-grade data use a dedicated system.

FAQ

What does the tone do?

It occasionally mismatches the shape (a low tone with the go shape, for instance). Most research shows the audio cue has a small effect — we include it so you can see whether audio noise throws you off.

Can I get faster?

Somewhat. Reaction time on Go/No-Go has a measurable ceiling around 250–300 ms for most adults. Don't sacrifice accuracy for speed.
