What makes this one different

Most "face memory" apps ask you to recall names from scratch. That's a recognition-failure trap — most people forget names even when they recognize faces. We use same/different judgments, which are more sensitive to underlying visual memory and less contaminated by name retrieval.

What problem does it solve?

Face memory is a well-studied but quirky cognitive ability. We have specialized neural machinery for face processing (the fusiform face area), but it's not the same as general visual memory. The combination of face + name is harder than either alone.

How to interpret your results

d' (sensitivity) above 1.5 is good. Above 2.0 is strong. Below 0.5 suggests your recognition signal is weak.

False alarms are informative too. High FA + low hits = guessing.

Limitations

  • We use abstract face-like patterns (geometric arrangements) rather than real faces. The principle transfers but absolute scores won't compare to face-specific tests.
  • The "names" we attach are common first names. If you don't read them out loud, encoding is weaker.

FAQ

Why don't you ask for the name?

Because most people forget the name even when they recognize the face. Same/different is more sensitive to the underlying visual memory and less contaminated by name retrieval failure.

What if I score much worse than expected?

Face memory varies a lot. If you're consistently below d'=0.5 across multiple sessions, you may want to consult a neuropsychologist — prosopagnosia is more common than people realize.
